From the Director of Public Safety

Welcome to the Charleston County Aviation Authority Department of Public Safety. Along with the women and men of the department, it is a pleasure to welcome you to our airport community.

The Charleston County Aviation Authority Board established the Aviation Authority Police Department in 1990. It was the board's intention to create a customized law enforcement agency, capable of responding to the unique environment of an airport community and the air traveling public.

The first police force in July 1990 comprised 13 officers and a civilian records specialist. Over the next 26 years, the agency evolved into a Department of Public Safety consisting of Civil Aviation Security and the Police Department. Together, the two departments form a cohesive operation capable of ensuring that our facilities, resources, tenants, and the nearly four million annual travelers we serve remain safe.

The Charleston County Aviation Authority Police Department has general law enforcement authority and responsibility within Charleston County. All sworn personnel are South Carolina State Certified Class 1 Law Enforcement Officers, empowered to enforce South Carolina laws and the ordinances of the Charleston County Aviation Authority within the geographical boundaries of the airport district, principally Charleston International Airport, Charleston Executive Airport (JZI) on Johns Island, and Mount Pleasant Regional Airport (LRO).

The Department of Public Safety reflects the diverse community we serve. The agency provides complete and continuous law enforcement and security services to customers and the community using our three airports. In addition, the agency works closely with the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, and all other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in support of our mission and goal of protecting and serving the community and customers that use our airports, providing a safe and secure environment and keeping customer service as a top priority.
