American Airlines plans CHS to ORD service

American Airlines announced Nov. 28 that it will launch service between Charleston and its Chicago O’Hare (ORD) hub in May 2018.

CHS was among five new destinations the airline announced. CHS flights will begin on May 4 and be flown twice daily by wholly owned subsidiary Envoy Air using E-175 aircraft.

Frontier Airlines launches its service to Philadelphia and Denver, each three days a week, followed on May 11 with its twice a week service to Chicago O'Hare (ORD), making it the fourth Charleston to Chicago connection.

According to a news release from American Airlines:

“Chicago plays a pivotal role in our global network, and these new destinations will ensure that our customers can efficiently get to where they need to travel,” said Franco Tedeschi, American’s Vice President – Chicago. “This network growth, along with the investments we continue to make in Chicago O’Hare International Airport and the community prove our commitment to the market, our customers and our more than 9,500 Chicago-based team members.”

The others new cities are Calgary International Airport (YYC), Vancouver International Airport (YVR), Bangor International Airport (BGR), and Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR).

Flights from ORD to YVR will launch on May 4 and will operate year-round, using 160-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Flights from ORD to YYC will operate on a summer-seasonal basis, starting on June 7 using 76-seat Embraer E-175 aircraft. Both new flights will offer a Business Class cabin, Main Cabin Extra seating and inflight Wi-Fi. BGR and MYR will launch June 7 and operate weekends only on Envoy using CRJ-700 aircraft for BGR and E-175 for MYR. 2017 has been a year of investing in Chicago for American.

Earlier this year, American launched new service from ORD to more than 10 new destinations, including Barcelona, Spain (BCN). Additionally, American recently debuted a brand new 17,000 square foot Flagship Lounge at ORD along with opening a renovated Admiral’s Club.

In addition to growing its schedule, the airline will also grow its footprint at ORD in 2018.

American is in the process of building five new gates off of the L Concourse at Terminal 3, the first new gates to be built at the airport in more than 20 years. Those gates are slated to open in the spring. American also is slated to open a new hangar and auto shop facility at ORD by the end of 2018.

From ORD, American operates more than 481 daily nonstop flights to nearly 130 destinations around the world including China, Europe and Japan. In 2016, American carried nearly 27 million passengers through Chicago O’Hare.
