CHS with other S.C. airports honored for diversity efforts

The South Carolina Airports Coalition, which includes Charleston International Airport (CHS), Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE), and Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) today will receive the Outstanding Business Award from the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and the Riley Institute at Furman University during the 2016 Upstate Diversity Leadership Awards. In partnership with Upstate chambers, the awards event takes place at the TD Convention Center in Greenville.
The Outstanding Business Award is given to a business that exhibits leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion internally and serves as an example for others to follow. 
The South Carolina Airports Coalition, comprised of the four commercial airports in the state, is being recognized for a first in the nation program designed to help small-, minority-, and women-owned businesses understand how to do business with the airports. 
The program, the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Fly-In, invites businesses from across the state to the airports where they learn about required state and federal certifications, vendor list selections and have the opportunity to network with airport representatives responsible for buying various goods and services.
More than 300 businesses have attended three of the four Fly-Ins to date. The final Fly-In for the year is scheduled June 23 at Myrtle Beach International Airport.
“The South Carolina Airports Coalition DBE-Fly-In Program is not only an outstanding example of diversity and inclusion but also a great example of partnership and collaboration involving the four largest airports in the state. This is the kind of program that can be duplicated by commercial airports around the country and result in having a major impact on how small-, minority- and women-owned businesses succeed by doing business with airports,” said GSP Airport District President/CEO Dave Edwards.
Paul G. Campbell Jr., executive director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority, said great strides have been made in the last year to improve diversity and inclusion at Charleston International Airport.
“Among those efforts is the DBE Fly-In Program, an outstanding example of how working together can improve participation in airport projects by small-, minority- and women-owned businesses. We are proud that this program has been recognized for its innovation and for setting an example that airports nationwide can follow. We hope this outreach will help build successful partnerships that encourage entrepreneurship and spur economic vitality in our local community and the state.”
