Construction milestones reached just in time for holiday travel

This weekend some big changes are coming to Charleston International Airport – just in time to make holiday travel a little easier.
Closed for more than a year, the traffic lanes in front of the terminal will reopen on Saturday morning and the new exit lane for arriving passengers will open in the airport’s Central Hall. Also on Saturday:
  • The third baggage claim carousel will reopen
  • All Concourse B gates and boarding lounges will open
“We’re excited to reach this point in the terminal redevelopment,” said Paul G. Campbell Jr., executive director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority, which owns and operates CHS. “Our passengers have been very patient throughout the construction. Everyone loves and upgrade but everyone will love it when the construction is done.”

The big change, though, will be traffic in front of the terminal. Passengers should watch for signage and drive with caution on International Boulevard as people become reacquainted with the normal traffic flow. The inside lanes – those closest to the terminal – will be for passenger pick up and drop off. The outside lanes – those closest to the parking deck – are for taxi, shuttle and other ground transportation pickup and drop off. Click on image to view larger map.
Construction will continue until spring 2016 on Concourse A and on new retail and dining outlets in the Central Hall. In addition, some work will continue in the opened areas for the next several weeks.
“We expect that by the end of the year most of the construction will be complete in ticketing, baggage claim and the public side of the Central Hall,” Campbell said. “That’s very exciting for everyone that works at the airport and for our passengers.”
