DeSano Pizza Bakery opens its CHS restaurant

Pizza for breakfast. Pizza for lunch. Pizza for dinner. Pizza anytime.

IMG_1261-web-(1).jpgAt Charleston International Airport all those are possible with today’s opening of DeSano Pizza Bakery. Located on the new section of Concourse B, DeSano is expected to be as popular as the downtown Charleston location.

DeSano Pizza Bakery is the first of the airport’s new food and beverage concessions to open as part of the $189 million Terminal Redevelopment and Improvement Program (TRIP). DeSano will showcase Charleston’s food culture while paying homage to the city’s rich history in the shipping industry and the importation of specialties from around the world.

DeSano opens at 5 a.m. and closes after the last flight departs CHS each night. The restaurant offers authentic Napoletana pizza handcrafted on-site and baked to perfection in 90 seconds in fire engine red pizza ovens that weigh 3,600 pounds each.

DeSano serves salads and meatball sandwiches, but the star of the restaurant is the freshly baked pizza, which at 11 inches will satisfy those with the heartiest of appetites. Each pizza has eight slices that can easily be shared with two or three people.  For the younger crowd, DeSano will “throw” dough for playing with to keep kids happy and engaged. Inside the restaurant is a bar featuring local craft brews, wines and spirits.

“When you walk into DeSano Pizza Bakery we want you to feel comfortable; we want you to feel like family,” said Greg Leonard, general for Delaware North Co., the airport food and beverage concessionaire. “Our dining area is European style with community tables. So when you come in you may sit with a stranger but you may well leave with friends for a lifetime.”

Delaware North will be opening other restaurants in the coming months. Some, like DeSano, also have Charleston connections, including Caviar and Bananas and Charleston Beer Works. Harvest & Grounds, coming in June to the Central Hall, will feature coffee provided by Charleston’s own King Bean Coffee Roasters. And the Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear Grill will be a golf lover’s delight, featuring not only great food but memorabilia from the golf legend’s career.
