Ho! Ho! Ho! Save some dough on airport parking during holidays

Charleston International Airport is offering holiday travelers discounts on parking this year.
parking-special.jpgThanksgiving and Christmas travelers can save money by parking in the CHS seasonal overflow parking lots.  Park four days and get one day free (an $8 savings). Park five or more days and get two days free (a $16 savings). The promotion applies only to the seasonal overflow parking lots, which are located between the airport loop road and Porsche Boulevard. Free shuttle service between the seasonal lot and the terminal will be provided.
To qualify for the discount, passengers must enter the self-serve seasonal overflow lots between Nov. 23 and 27 and Dec. 21 and 25. A credit or debit card (no cash) is required to enter and exit. The discount will be applied at checkout.
“This is the first year that we are offering a discount,” said Mike Heider, manager of ground transportation services at Charleston International Airport.  “If it goes well, we may consider future holiday discounts for our passengers.”
Thanksgiving is the biggest travel day of the year but the airport expects to be busy through the New Year. During the week of Thanksgiving last year, 30,209 passengers passed through the security screening checkpoints at CHS. Nearly 28,000 passengers went through the checkpoints during the week of Christmas, according the Transportation Security Administration at CHS.
With the airport’s $189 million Terminal Redevelopment and Improvement Program (TRIP) in full swing, passengers traveling through CHS should plan to arrive early to navigate the holiday traffic as well as the construction inside the airport.  Here are some helpful tips to make the passenger experience with Charleston International Airport easy:
The airport and the parking lots will be congested. Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and leave plenty of time to navigate traffic coming to the airport, park, check in and get through security without being rushed.  Airlines typically recommend passengers arrive between 60 and 90 minutes before departure. Most flights board 30 to 45 minutes before the posted departure time.
Departing passengers that don’t have to drive are encouraged to have someone drop them off at the airport or carpool with someone else coming to CHS. CARTA bus service and taxi services are widely available in the Lowcountry.
Parking is free in the CHS cell phone waiting lot for family and friends picking up passengers arriving at CHS. Real-time information about incoming flights is displayed on the outdoor marquee. Up to 40 vehicles can park at a time.
