Memorial Day shaping up to be busy travel weekend

#CHStraveltips: Arrive early
The official start of summer is poised to be a busy travel weekend at Charleston International Airport. That means passengers should plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their flight is scheduled to take off.
memday.jpgThe Transportation Security Administration at CHS expects to screen between 6,400 and 7,200 departing passengers a day beginning Friday and continuing through Tuesday. That’s higher than Memorial Day travel in 2015. Coupled with arriving passengers, the airport expects nearly 14,500 people a day to be in and out of the airport during the holiday travel period.
“There are things passengers can do to make sure they have a hassle-free travel experience and so they don’t miss their flight because of lines at the airport,” said Paul G. Campbell, Jr., executive director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority.
Arrive early. More people are traveling and the airlines have added destinations and larger aircraft. More people means the parking lots fill more quickly. If you have to park farther away from the terminal, you want to have time to do so without rushing.
More people means more luggage to be checked at ticketing and screened at the security checkpoint. Check your bags ahead of time for items that are prohibited on planes. Prohibited items in carryon luggage can slow the screening process and increase wait time.
In 2015, TSA at CHS screened an average of 5,269 passengers a day during the Memorial Day travel period. This year’s average could reach 7,000 a day.
“Charleston has grown and along with it the airport has grown to meet the travel needs of our passengers,” Campbell said. “Don’t take the chance of missing your flight by arriving 30 minutes before takeoff. Get here early, get through security so you can relax at your gate and get something to eat or drink without rushing and so you have a great travel experience.”
