Thanksgiving tops the list for busiest time for holiday travel

More people travel through Charleston International Airport for Thanksgiving compared with Christmas, but the busiest travel day for turkey day might not be what you think.
More people travel on Thanksgiving Day to avoid the travel crush, right? Not at CHS.
Thanksgiving-travel-stats-2014.jpgLast year 33,334 people were screened for departing flights at CHS during the week of Thanksgiving. The busiest travel days were the Tuesday before and the Sunday after, according to security screening data provided by the Transportation Security Administration at CHS.
On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving last year, TSA screened 5,689 passengers for outgoing flights. The day before Thanksgiving was busy too with 5,283 passengers screened. On Thanksgiving Day, just 2,653 passengers screened for travel.
The top travel days at CHS after Thanksgiving were the Sunday after with 6,115 passengers screened, the Monday after with 5,567 and the Saturday after with 5,300.
“Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday season so we expect to be as busy, if not busier, this year than last year,” said Paul G. Campbell Jr., executive director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Authority, which owns and operates CHS.
“While we will be busy, there are things passengers can do to make sure they have a great, hassle-free travel experience,” Campbell said. “Our terminal redevelopment project is on a fast track toward completion. I want to thank our passengers for being patient through the noise and dust. By the end of the year a majority of the terminal redevelopment will be complete in many areas of the airport.”
When traveling during the holidays, allow plenty of time to drive to the airport, park and check in. You may have to park in a remote lot so you want to have plenty of time to catch a shuttle to the terminal.
Holidays are busy so passengers should allow time for security screening in case there are lines. Having plenty of time means passengers won’t have to rush to get to their gate for boarding.
Parking at CHS
The parking deck, surface lot and remote parking lots will be open for holiday travelers. The seasonal remote lots will be open Nov. 24 through Jan. 10.
There are three parking options available at CHS.
  • Seasonal remote lots - $8 a day (free shuttle to terminal)
  • Surface Parking - $8 a day
  • Deck Parking - $15 a day
  • Valet Parking - $18 a day
Parking will be at a premium during the holidays. Passengers are encouraged to consider alternatives to parking at the airport. If you don’t have to drive, have someone drop you off at the airport or carpool with someone else coming to CHS. CARTA bus service and taxi services are also widely available in the Lowcountry.
After the holidays, family and friends can pick up arriving passengers with ease. Parking for up to 40 vehicles is free in the cell phone waiting lot, which is on International Boulevard just before the terminal building.
Information about incoming flights is displayed on the outdoor marquee or available on the CHS mobile responsive web site
