We are prepping for construction to start in Concourse A, home to Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Silver Airways.
Temporary walls to separate passengers from the demolition and rebuilding have gone up. Demolition work is expected to begin soon. Construction will take place into early 2016.
The renovation work will include:
- a complete transformation of the boarding lounges with new seating
- renovated concourse walkway
- new places to shop and eat, including Charleston Beer Works – an in-the-round brewpub and sports bar popular in downtown Charleston.
- five new jet bridges
- clerestory to mirror the one on the new addition on Concourse B.
In April, United Airlines moved to temporary space at gates B8 and B10 on the new addition at Concourse B. Plans are being finalized to relocate the Silver Airways gate by mid-July. Construction crews will perform the work in phases.Deltawill remain on ConcourseA during the work.
The renovation at Concourse A will resemble the new construction on Concourse B with a boarding lounge that is open and bright because of expansive floor- to-ceiling windows and a 6-foot clerestory that floods the room with light. The white décor – from the terrazzo floors to bar- and banquette-style seating – will give the room a fresh, open feel that passengers will enjoy as they wait to board their flights.
Renovations are also about to get under way on the old boarding lounges on Concourse B. A temporary passage way has been constructed and makes it easy for passengers to navigate the concourse.
The Charleston County Aviation Authority, which owns and operates CHS, will also modernize its baggage handling systems and build all new airline ticket counters. The new Southwest Airlines ticket counter is slated to open in July, followed by Delta, the final airline to move to new ticket space, in the fall.
Already complete is a Central Energy Plant, new ramp space for overnight parking space of aircraft, three new baggage carousels, a Rental Car Pavilion and all new utilities.
Through the terminal redevelopment CHS will grow approximately 330,000 square feet to 429,000 square feet.
