DeSano Pizza Bakery coming soon

This is the fourth in a series of Project Spotlights on new food and beverage concessions coming to the airport.

Who doesn’t love pizza? We do, and we know CHS passengers are going to love DeSano Pizza Bakery when it opens this spring on Concourse B at Charleston International.

DeSano Pizza Bakery will showcase Charleston’s food culture while paying homage to the city’s rich history in the shipping industry and the importation of specialties from around the world. CHS travelers will appreciate the high quality, high value fare, and they will enjoy the urban ambiance that creates that sense of Charleston.

DeSano will be the first of the airport’s new food and beverage concessions to open as part of the $189 million Terminal Redevelopment and Improvement Program (TRIP). In addition to what the airport is spending to renovate and expand, an additional $10 million is being spent by private companies to establish all new food, beverage and retail concessions as part of the airport expansion.

DeSano is a local favorite with a national following and offers authentic Napoletana pizza handcrafted on-site and baked to perfection in 90 seconds. The open integrated design includes a focus on the dramatic pizza ovens. The d├ęcor is comprised of the authentic ingredients used in making pizza, including large bags of flour, cans of colorfully labeled San Marzano tomatoes, bottles of glistening sea salt and olive oil, and of course, lots of leafy greens. The beauty of the concept is that it requires minimal back-of-house storage space as most production work takes place right in front of the customer.

The DeSano brand is kitchen theatre at its best. The glow of the wood-fired ovens from Mount Vesuvius provide the backdrop for dough spinning in the air around the lush green herbs standing tall in wait for topping on the next pie. The aroma of freshly baked pizza dough coupled with a bar featuring the best of Charleston in brews and spirits add to the theatre. This will be a great space to enjoy a beverage, revel in the thrill of the victories of sports favorites, and enjoy the unique nature of Charleston’s culinary delights.

For the younger crowd, DeSano will “throw” dough for playing with to keep kids happy and engaged. Tired parents appreciate the diversion, especially on those long travel days.

If DeSano’s open kitchen and the aroma of a fresh bakery do not draw travelers in, the selection of local craft brews, wines and spirits will do it. While just about everything goes with pizza, there is nothing like a great specialty beer or ale to complete the experience. The pizza bakery will feature a variety of local names such as Palmetto’s Charleston Lager or their espresso Porter. Great options from COAST, including HopArt IPA or 32/50 Kolsch along with others will populate the beer menu.

For those preferring to bypass alcohol, the pizza bakery will offer a variety of other beverages including gourmet coffee from Charleston favorite, King Bean Coffee Roasters. A meal with a brew or an espresso at DeSano will not only be a great pairing, but also a tribute to the culinary talents of Charlestonians.

DeSano’s downtown Charleston pizza bakery is located at 94 Stuart St. between East Bay and Meeting streets.

Owner Scott DeSano and his partner Rory Brown share a passion for pizza, and they hold the belief that everybody will love their pizza. The desire to deliver an authentic Italian experience that his family would be proud of brought Scott into the business. They bought the business from Atlanta’s much-loved Antico Pizza Napoletana. Subsequently, they opened a Nashville location and between the two restaurants, the rave reviews flow. Rory’s love of all things Charleston prompted the duo to bring their newest location to Charleston, and now Charleston International.

The airport location is slated for a March/April opening.
