Your plane has landed. You have your bags. What is next? You need a vehicle to get you where you need to go on this vacation or business trip.
Five rental car companies already are conveniently located next to baggage claim inside Charleston International Airport. But sometimes flyers waiting for their luggage compete for space with the people standing in line for cars. The tight quarters will be a thing of the past in the spring 2014 when the new CHS Rental Car Pavilion is scheduled to open.
Work began in February 2013 to build a bigger, brighter and just as convenient rental car customer service area at the northwest end of the terminal building. What once were exit doors were covered with temporary walls and outside a fence screen went up around the site. Summer 2013 saw construction kick into high gear – steel beams and cranes became a part of the construction site’s skyline.
For rental car customers there is currently a bit of a walk from the rental car counters to the parking lot. But it’s only a temporary inconvenience for a long-term improvement that is just around the corner. Once construction is complete, visitors will have a short walk from baggage claim to the rental car counter then to their waiting vehicles.
After the rental car companies move into their new digs, the baggage claim area will undergo a major renovation. Ceilings will come out, new baggage carousels will be unveiled and, in dramatic fashion, the brick front of the terminal building will be demolished and replaced with floor to ceiling glass walls.
When the dust settles and the rubble is gone what will be left will be an open, more modern space and a brighter passageway through the airport. We will tell you more about that phase of the construction at a later date so stay tuned.
