Changes coming to TSA screening locations at CHS

Changes coming to TSA screening locations at CHS

3/24/2015

Passengers traveling out of Charleston International Airport on Tuesday, April 14, will want to give themselves extra time to get through security.

tsa-checkpoint.jpgWork is under way to open the new consolidated TSA screening checkpoint. To do that screening equipment will be moved from the existing checkpoints over two nights. Then on Wednesday, April 15 all passengers traveling out of CHS will be screened in the new consolidated checkpoint.

CHS is working diligently and in concert with the TSA to ensure the move goes smoothly and so there are minimal delays for passengers.

Screening equipment from one lane at each of the current TSA checkpoints will be moved overnight on Monday, April 13. On the morning of Tuesday, April 14, there will be one lane open for screening on Concourse A (United and Delta) and two to three lanes open on Concourse B. Because there will be fewer open lanes, passengers may notice longer lines and extended wait times. Arrive early to ensure you are able to board you flight on time.

The remaining TSA screening equipment will be moved overnight on April 14 and the new screening area will open for the morning flights on Wednesday, April 15.

The new consolidated checkpoint is designed to accommodate up to eight lanes for screening. Four lanes will open initially, increasing to six soon after. As passenger growth dictates, the remaining two lanes will open. The TSA intends to open a dedicated TSA Pre✓® lane. Currently the TSA Pre✓® lanes at the Concourse A and B checkpoints are open limited hours each day based on expected passenger flow.

The entrance to the new consolidated TSA screening checkpoint will be adjacent to the Southwest Airlines ticket counter in the Ticketing Hall.

Opening the consolidated checkpoint is a significant milestone in the $189 million Terminal Redevelopment and Improvement Program (TRIP). Once open it paves the way for additional renovations throughout the airport.

Passengers will notice some positive changes.

After clearing the screening area, passengers will be able to move freely between Concourses A and B. That is not currently possible with separate screening checkpoints. When all the CHS food and beverage concessions are open this will give passengers more choices in dining and shopping at the airport.

For those picking up passengers on April 15 and after, a temporary exit lane will be located near the Information Desk and Baggage Claim. Passengers from all flights will exit the secure area of the airport at this location. The permanent exit lane is under construction. It will be located in the Central Hall atrium.
