CHS Expands Gate Capacity

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C.—Thursday September 22nd, Charleston County Aviation Authority Board members joined airport CEO Elliott Summey and airport stakeholders for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of 2 new gates on Concourse A. The addition of the new gates is a part of CHS’s plan to increase the airport’s gate capacity. CHS has been in expansion mode in recent months, coinciding with a record rebound in domestic and regional travel demand.

CHS CEO Elliott Summey said: “The gate expansion is just one way we are growing our infrastructure to ensure we are prepared for what we expect to be the busiest travel year in the history of CHS. We expect to see a recording breaking 5 million passengers this year and look for the number to continue to grow.”

In addition to Gates A6 & A7 construction, the airport also opened a third gate, A2A, in July, increasing the airport’s total gate capacity by 20%. The construction cost for the three-gate expansion was 11.5 million dollars, funded by the Airport Authority. The expansion project was delivered on time and under budget.

“We are beaming with pride as we introduce our customers and employees to this exceptional expansion, which gives us the ability to continue growing and serving our CHS customers,” said Helen T. Hill, Board Chair and CEO of Explore Charleston. “These new gates will provide our airport partners with more options and improve our passenger experience.”
